One of the basic building blocks of maths is multiplication. Learning the times tables is a vital part of arithmetic. As with other subjects some children might take easily to learning their multiplication tables while others might find it more of a challenge – sometimes even a struggle.

Teachers often depend on parents to help and support struggling children at home – often via rote practicing of the times tables. However, this isn't always effective and parents can grow frustrated, leading them to question whether multiplication tables really are that important.

Are they necessary?

YES! VERY!

Why?

Memorising the multiplication tables prepares children for the future stages of maths. These future stages involve more challenging calculations that bring in division – both short and long – as well as more complicated mathematics.

If the child is deprived of the essential understanding of their times tables, then they are likely to struggle terribly with their maths as they progress through school.


Long division and two-digit multiplication will be daunting and challenging for children who do not possess a solid grasp of their multiplication tables.

Understandably then, learning and memorizing one's times tables is essential. Without this basic block of understanding, a child will find maths challenging and their confidence will crumble.

It's also important to consider all the other areas in life where we use multiplication. Our everyday life is full of examples. From domestic situations such as cooking to the calculation of bills and the managing of finances. Even out when we're shopping or dining!

All of these necessary and everyday tasks are made easier and achieved faster when one knows their times tables.While these points are all valid and important, it might take a little more to convince a child who is struggling.

It's important to note that in some situations a child's struggle can be chalked up to a learning difficulty – especially if they are receiving consistent help from parents and teachers. If this is the case then a child will need to be given alternative methods for learning their multiplication tables.


A child must always be supported and encouraged.Negative emotions impact terribly on learning. Self-consciousness, stress, conflict, anxiety and other such emotions hamper a child's development. It can go so far as to completely prevent the learning of new information. Bearing this in mind, it's vital that parents support their child rather than reprimand or criticize them.

New and innovative methods can help a struggling child by encouraging them to learn in the way that suits the way they process information.

For example, the use of games that incorporate multiplication tables can be very effective for some children. Others respond better to software programs and the use of animals or TV characters. These visual and more enjoyable methods of learning can help children memorize better. Flash cards have also proven to be effective in memorizing multiplication tables.

By making the learning experience more enjoyable and engaging for children, the incentive and ability to learn is enhanced. Children gain a more rewarding learning experience, which makes boring mathematical facts something fun to learn.
